Have you been to Italy and seen the three major cities like Rome, Florence and Venice? Perhaps you’ve ventured to the Amalfi Coast and some smaller towns in Tuscany or taken a few days in Milan and Lake Como. There is so much more to see and do in Italy. It remains the #1 destination in the world. Italy has the most UNESCO World Heritage sites of any other country. It is rich in history and oozes culture. Of course, there’s the food. One of the most beloved cuisines in the world.
Via Mondo Travel & Wellness introduces Piedmont. A food and wine experience like no other with endless breathtaking views of vineyards, hazelnut trees and fruit orchards. In between the vast landscape, perched on mountain peaks are the hilltop towns of Barolo and Barbaresco. And yes, I mean towns. The wines carry the names of the towns they’re harvested from.
On this 10 day trip to Italy, we pick you up at the Milan airport and take you to Turin, the capital of Piedmont. After you settle in your room at Hotel Sitea, perfectly nestled in the center of town, we have a city walk and chocolate tasting. The famous and creamy gianduiotto! The next day is free to explore the 2nd largest Egyptian Museum outside of Egypt, head to The Royal Palace or browse the sites carefree under the covered sidewalks.
Once we leave Turin, we begin our adventure to the Langhe area, the wine region of Piedmont. Along the way, we shake our legs out with a short but easy hike then off to a spectacular resort and spa nestled among the vineyards. Here we spend a few days drinking our way through the region. To keep us from toppling over, we’ve arranged a few hikes, optional bike rides and gathering spots to pair these rich and brilliant wines with. From Barbaresco, we climb the tower to get a birds-eye view of the valley. From here, we try 3-4 varieties of Barbaresco. Pick one you like then savor the view along with some local specialities. In Barolo, we not only explore the city center, but the Castello Falletti di Barolo which houses the wine museum. We don’t feel this is enough to truly experience the local wine, so we arranged 2 winery visits, where the families produce the famous Barolo wines. How could I forget truffle hunting with Carlo and his dog, Steal?! A must in these parts.
To top the trip off, we spend our last couple of days basking in the sun on Fisherman’s island at Lago Maggiore. Here, you have plenty of great adventures to explore. Ride the Monte Mottarone Cable Car for a panoramic view of the islands and lake towns, take a leisurely boat ride on the lake or visit the many Fortresses, and villas that adorn Lago Maggiore. Before leaving, enjoy the island life and take in the lake breezes. Perhaps a day to pamper yourself before heading home and if you are off to another adventure, let us plan your post travels to keep things simple and easy. This vacation will not disappoint foodies, wine lovers, active and wellness travelers.
